Archery Stabilizer: To Use or Not To Use

There are many pieces of equipment that go into the sport of archery. On of which you may not have been aware is the archery stabilizer. Stabilizers are crucial in improving your accuracy, but are not something the beginning archer may be completely familiar with.

An archery stabilizer is some combination of dampers, weights, and rods that connect to your bow with a screw. Essentially what it does is dull the oscillation of the bow upon release of the arrow. The reason this is necessary or at least preferred is that excess energy can cause you to recoil and lose arrow accuracy. A stabilizer takes what energy from release is not put into the arrow and dampens it. However, not every archer supports or believes in the use of stabilizers.

Some archers believe that a stabilizer, while effective in improving scores and overall accuracy, are a form of cheating. Instead of improving technique and personal achievement, the archery stabilizer simply improves the shooter with technology. Though these arguments come up often in the use of stabilizers, they are still completely legal in most competitions. Therefore, if you dream of competing in the sport, then it is reasonable to believe you will need an archery stabilizer of some sort to help you out. The only way to beat the technology is with technology.

Though they are a source of controversy for many, a stabilizer is one of those accessories that is not going anywhere. Whether you use it just to absorb shock or to also balance the weight on your bow as well, you will probably need an archery stabilizer to some degree if you want to compete. Otherwise, it is the equivalent to trying to win Wimbledon with a wooden racket, and you likely won’t see that ever again.
